As I have stated in previous articles, the Internet is full of stores and shops where you can purchase a whole slew of various types of picture frames. These frames are typically mass produced and fairly generic in nature (however it is possible to find sites that also produce high quality custom frames). Another option when looking for custom frames is to look in your local community and see if you have a custom frame maker. In my town we have several small businesses that specialize in the creation of custom frames and also sell various picture frame accessories.
Another option that you may not have considered is making your own picture frames. Ok, I know you are thinking that making your own frame is a complicated endeavor that is way out of your league. Creating your own picture frame is actually fairly easy. Here is an excellent video that provides a brief overview of the steps involved.
These gentlemen lay out the process very nicely. Not only do they discuss all of the steps in very basic terms, which makes it very easy for the layman woodworker to grasp, but they also provide you with excellent footage that shows specifically which tools you need to get the job done.
One of the things to keep in mind while working on this project is that practice makes perfect. These gents, talented as they are, did not wake up one morning with this skill perfected. The more practice you get making picture frames, the better your product will be. If you have any experience working with miter cuts and table saws, then your first attempts may not be too bad. However, if you have never played with these tools before it will take you a couple of attempts to get the feel for it. For instance, corners have to be cut in a very specific manner. If your cut is out by just a degree the joint will not marry up and you will have a gap in the corners of your frame. This is not the end of the world, but it is annoying.
So, if you would prefer to make your own homemade picture frames instead of buying them, give this video series a shot and see what you think. I know these two blokes inspired me.
